PLANT OF THE MONTH:
December 2008

SUCCULENT WREATHS

By Dr. Rahpee Thongthiraj

Colorful lights decorating homes, gifts around the tree, and the smell of chocolate chip cookies in the home are cheerful reminders that December is a time to celebrate the holidays.   Hang a living succulent wreath on your door or above your mantle to add some holiday spirit for your family and friends. For more versatility, you can use a variation of the succulent wreath by placing a succulent ball as a festive centerpiece. Mix in your favorite holiday accents like pinecones, candles, and red berries. Whether you choose a succulent ball or wreath, this traditional holiday decoration will certainly be welcomed by your guests.

Caring for your succulent wreath is simple:  Water only when the moss base is completely dry. Immerse the ball in water or by sprinkling. To keep the succulent wreath or ball fresh-looking, mist with a spray bottle.  Hang this beautiful succulent display in bright natural sunlight. Avoid placing the wreath in direct sun as the succulents may burn.

Here are simple instructions to planting your own hanging succulent wreath:
1) Purchase a hanging basket or a round container already filled with sphagnum
moss.
2) Plant individual succulents such as Echeverias, Sedums, and Sempervivums into the moss. Make a small hole inside the moss prior to planting. Secure the individual succulents from behind with a piece of stiff wire if necessary.
3) If not already on the basket, attach hanging chains to the hanging container.

Succulent wreaths not only make unique gifts, but also creative ways to grow plants.  Its innovative design and base for colorful mixture of Echeverias, Sedums, and other succulents will undoubtedly be an enjoyment for you and your guests throughout the year!
